Ricardo is an award-winning bilingual photographer (Spanish/English) with more than 20 years of experience with News Wire agencies photo coverage, multimedia applications, as well as video journalism and he has spent most of his professional career covering news events in Latin America, which he has covered broadly as a correspondent for AP Photos for 12 years and Agence France-Presse since 2017 while based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. During those years he had the opportunity to cover several international interest news events in Haiti such as the Haiti's President Assassination in 2021 2006, 2011 and 2017 elections campaigns, elections day and its aftermaths as well as the 2010 earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince and the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Also, in 2016-2017 while living in Phoenix, Arizona Ricardo had the opportunity to cover several 2016 U.S. Presidential Elections campaign rallies for Reuters.
Prior to this, he spent 9 years as a staff Video Journalist for Telemundo-NBC Puerto Rico. He also completed in May 2017 a two day Hostile Environment Training and First Aid (HEFAT) provided by Oakleaf Worldwide in Washington DC and in 2022 a 5 day Hostile Environment Training and First Aid (HEFAT) in Jeffersonville, NY which provided him the preparation and awareness to work under the circumstances that may arise anywhere in the region in terms of natural disasters, hard/spot news and feature photography coverage as well as video.
He is also an accomplished FAA Certified Part 107 drone pilot/photographer/videographer with more than five years of experience. His aerial photos have been featured in Time Magazine and his aerial coverage of the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico has been vastly published by countless news publications from around the world through Agence France-Presse. The Guardian even named one of his images as one of the best aerial photos of the year.
